Mechanical engineer for particle accelerator applications

Headline

We are ready to build this accelarator! Are you?

Highlights

  • be part of an international team developing a high‑power superconducting proton accelerator.
  • steer the procurement process of several high‑power RF components.
  • perform contract follow‑up with collaborators for the designed components.
  • close collaboration with internal and external teams.
  • once applicable, contribute to the installation, commissioning and operation of the accelerator.

Job description

Together with a team of ambitious engineers and researchers, SCK CEN aims to develop new medical radioisotopes to treat cancer patients and solve the nuclear waste issue through the MYRRHA project (www.myrrha.be). The first implementation phase of MYRRHA (commissioning scheduled to start in 2027) consists of a ≈170 m long, superconducting, high‑power proton accelerator with exceptional reliability and two target facilities for research into radioisotopes, radioactive ion beam physics and nuclear fusion reactor materials.

To help achieve these ambitious goals, we are looking for a new team member to join the “Accelerator Mechanics Group” (ACM) to follow up the design, procurement and commissioning of the RF components for the particle accelerator (RF power couplers, RF tuners, RF transmission lines, circulators, …). While some accelerator components are still being designed, others are already being procured to be ready in time for installation starting in 2027.

You will work closely with design engineers and physicists. With the support of accelerator system experts and ATS project officers, you will:

  • follow up ongoing contracts for accelerator components, focusing on RF‑related elements.
  • manage the in‑house manufacturing process for selected RF components.
  • participate in test campaigns.
  • prepare and maintain documentation for assigned components.
  • take part in installation and commissioning once applicable.

Job requirements

  • Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering or equivalent.
  • more than 4 years of experience as an engineer.
  • familiarity with standardization of mechanical parts.
  • experience with high‑power RF components is an asset.
  • experience in systems engineering is an additional asset.
  • familiarity with 3D CAD software (Creo, Ansys).
  • experience writing technical documentation.
  • fluent spoken and written English.
  • self‑managing team player with attention to detail and a structured work approach.
