Job description

The Belgian Reactor 2 (BR2) has been a leading material testing reactor since 1962 and plays a crucial role in nuclear safety, medical innovation and technological progress. BR2 supports worldwide production of medical radioisotopes for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as cancer, tests materials for current and future nuclear facilities and contributes to the production of high-performance semiconductors for applications in renewable energy, mobility and high-tech industries.

For the operation of the BR2 reactor, we are looking for a motivated Reactor Operation Manager. In this key position, you will be responsible for directing the operational activities of the reactor and leading a multidisciplinary team of over 40 employees. Combining technical expertise with leadership, you will ensure that the reactor is operated safely, efficiently and in compliance with statutory requirements.

Your responsibilities:

Managing the Reactor Operation Management expert group (ROM):

  • You will manage a team of at least 40 employees, responsible for the cyclical operation of the BR2 reactor.
  • You will coordinate an organisation that operates on a full-time 6-shift system, supported by a day shift team.
  • You will be responsible for managing waste streams and operational handling of materials disposed of from BR2.
  • You will coordinate the activities of the ROM expert group with other departments within BR2.
  • You will monitor the critical path of shutdown planning with the relevant stakeholders and make adjustments as needed.
  • You will make daily decisions to efficiently solve operational problems.
  • You will develop and coordinate training plans for the expert group and operation leaders.
  • You will initiate and supervise improvement projects from A to Z to continuously optimise the operation of ROM.
  • You will manage the budget of the ROM expert group.

Training and knowledge development:

  • You will attend an average of 80 hours of training annually according to the applicable training matrix.
  • You will continuously update your knowledge of reactor facilities, processes and supporting systems.
  • You will attend the Duty Operational Leader (OLD) training and manage the group of OLDs.

Job requirements

Technical knowledge and expertise:

  • You have or are willing to build a thorough knowledge of:
  • The operation of the BR2 reactor and associated facilities.
  • The processes and circuits as described in the flow sheets, procedures and technical manuals.
  • Nuclear waste management processes and their administrative follow-up.
  • Production facilities in and around the reactor and associated documentation.
  • Experiments within the reactor environment and their administrative organisation.
  • The different charge elements and their possible manipulations.
  • The statutory and regulatory requirements for reactor operation.
  • The administrative processes within BR2 and the organisation.

Diploma and experience:

You possess one of the following profiles:

Master's degree in civil engineering:

  • A minimum of 4 years of relevant working experience
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience within a relevant nuclear installation.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience within BR2*

Master's degree in industrial engineering:

  • A minimum of 6 years of relevant working experience
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience within a relevant nuclear installation.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience within BR2*

*This position is intended as preparation for succeeding the current Reactor Operation Manager in the future. A transition period is provided for, during which the necessary expertise, operational knowledge and internal experience regarding the BR2 reactor and its processes can be built up.
