Job description
With the VITRASC project, SCK CEN is strengthening Belgium’s long term capability to safely treat highly radioactive liquid waste through vitrification. To support this essential step in national waste management, we are looking for a Senior Expert Transport and Packaging of Nuclear Materials, responsible for the complete logistics chain of high activity materials.
In this role, you represent SCK CEN in interactions with suppliers of specialized radioactive transport packages and support all transports between SCK CEN buildings, towards Belgoprocess and to potential third party destinations.
Your responsibilities:
- define the radiological and physico chemical characteristics of high activity materials as the basis for the approved content of transport packages
- map loading and unloading requirements and constraints in all involved buildings at SCK CEN, Belgoprocess and external partners
- coordinate the procurement, manufacturing and delivery of transport means, packages and associated tools
- ensure compliance with Belgian and international regulations (AFCN/FANC, IAEA SSR 6, ADR Class 7)
- review supplier documentation such as safety files, test reports and operational procedures
- support licensing activities and the preparation of safety documentation related to the transport of high activity liquids and vitrified products
- participate in FATs, readiness reviews and qualification phases at supplier facilities
- provide technical input for contract management and follow up of project milestones
- act as liaison between the project team, IDPBW, suppliers and regulatory authorities
- develop operational procedures for loading, unloading and on site transfers
- define and qualify packaging and transfer solutions between process areas and temporary storage zones
- align transport documentation with the safety cases of the involved facilities
- manage interfaces with internal and external stakeholders during inspections, reviews and approval processes
Job requirements
- Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering
- at least 10 years of experience in the nuclear sector with a focus on radioactive material transport
- in depth knowledge of Belgian nuclear regulations and experience with safety or licensing files
- strong knowledge of international transport regulations (IAEA SSR 6, ADR Class 7)
- experience in safety analysis, radiation protection and criticality assessments related to transport packages
- practical experience in nuclear installations performing loading and unloading of high activity materials
- strong project coordination and technical reporting skills
- fluency in Dutch, French and English
